In today’s fast paced lifestyle it has become increasingly important to have an extremely functional and user friendly kitchen. Modern kitchen design strives around a few important concepts to consider when remodeling your existing kitchen or building your new home. A few of the most important kitchen design concepts include, the work triangle and ample work centers.
Perhaps the most important basic concept in kitchen design is the work triangle. In fact, most other concepts are generated around this concept. A good work triangle is essential in a well designed kitchen. The work triangle is not a new concept and has been around for many decades, it is generally determined by the range, sink, and refrigerator. However, with the importance of convenience and function in today’s world, this is a concept that has been revamped to include cook tops, wall ovens, microwaves, warming drawers, dishwashers, etc. The general rule of thumb in kitchen design is that all three legs of the triangle combined should equal no more than 26 feet. This keeps a good work flow throughout the kitchen and allows easy access for the cook(s). When designing your kitchen it is important that no traffic pass through the work triangle. This keeps the work space clear at all times for the cook.
Another imperative concept is having ample work centers. We have found convenience and function to be the most popular requests when speaking to a potential client. Work centers include, a prep area, cooking area, storage area, and clean up area. This provides the cook with a fully functional kitchen. The prep area includes the refrigerator, if available a prep sink, and adequate counter space, the cooking area of course, includes all cooking appliances such as cook tops, ranges, wall ovens, microwaves, and warming drawers, as well as adequate counter space. Storage area is a unique concept that has grown with the idea of have a fully functional kitchen. Available on the market today are some brilliant storage solutions for use throughout your kitchen such as, tiered utensil dividers, recycling centers, pots and pans pull out drawers, spice racks, can storage, pantry pull outs, and much more. The clean up area includes a garbage area such as a recycling center, sink and dishwasher.
